The Ultimate Guide to Teak Care and Maintenance: Preserving the Beauty of Your Teak Furniture

Teak furniture is renowned for its durability, timeless beauty, and resistance to decay. However, proper care and maintenance are crucial to ensure your investment lasts for years to come.

Your New Teak Furniture - Initial Weathering

New teak product will secrete some of its natural oils for the first few weeks which can stain light coloured cushions (or porous stone patio surfaces). We recommend wiping down your new natural teak furniture with a damp cloth & allowing the oils in your furniture to dry for a minimum of 2 weeks before use. This should be done before placing new cushions on the product. If cushions/fabrics do become stained by the oils in the teak, we recommend the use of our Upholstery Cleaner.

Yearly Maintenance for Color Preservation: To maintain the honey color of your teak furniture, yearly maintenance is necessary. After a light sanding, the application of Teak Protector is recommended. This process helps restore the original color and protects the wood from weathering. Optionally, Teak Shield can be applied for additional water and stain resistance.

For those who prefer an accelerated aging process and want the classic weathered grey look, the Instant Grey product swiftly transforms new golden-brown teak into a silver-grey patina within an hour.

Teak Shield Application: Teak Shield is a clear protectant for teak wood, enhancing its resistance to water and stains. However, it needs to be reapplied every season for consistent weather resistance. A light sanding with 180 grit sandpaper is recommended before deciding to reapply Teak Shield.

Stain Removal and Cleaning: For finished teak, gently sand the stained area with fine sandpaper. Periodic cleaning is advised to prevent mildew buildup. A dedicated Teak Cleaner is recommended for this purpose. If the wood grain stands up after cleaning, lightly sand the surface to maintain its smooth texture.

Understanding Black Dots and Mildew: While teak itself is resistant to mildew, it can still develop in humid and warm conditions due to dirt and foreign substances on the wood. If you notice black dots or mildew, a gentle cleaning with mild soap and water or a specialized teak cleaner is recommended. Avoid abrasive cleaners or power washers to prevent damage.

Natural Characteristics and Minor Cracks: Teak is a natural product, and minor cracks " Teak Checking " can occur as part of its natural aging process. This is a testament to the authenticity and character of your teak table. These cracks do not compromise the table's integrity, and are expected during the early weathering stages and can occur during extreme humidity fluctuations.

Grade A Plantation Teak Assurance: At Hauser we use Grade A Plantation teak, specifically the "heartwood," ensuring high quality with no sapwood, stains, bleach, or chemical alterations. This distinction underscores the commitment to providing premium teak furniture that withstands the test of time.

Proper care and maintenance are key to preserving the natural beauty of teak furniture. By following these guidelines and utilizing high-quality teak care products, you can enjoy your teak furniture for years to come.
