Natural & Finished Teak Care

Natural Teak

Teak is a very durable tropical hardwood that is easy to care for, and in the absence of regular cleaning will over time fade from is natural honey-like colour to a silver-grey.

New furniture

We recommend wiping down your new natural teak furniture with a damp cloth & allowing the oils in your furniture to dry for a minimum of 2 weeks before use. During this time avoid placing your furniture on light coloured, porous stone patio surfaces until the bleeding process has subsided & do not place cushions (especially light coloured fabrics) on the furniture until after this period.

The natural oils present in teak are what make it the best timber for outdoor furniture and a high oil content is an indicator of high-quality teak. The oils and pigments within the surface layer of the teak will gradually start to be washed out during the first few exposures to rain. This is a natural occurrence and the bleeding will subside over time – around 2-3 months depending on the environment the furniture is placed in.

The amount of oil that washes out of the teak in the firstfew months will be higher, and therefore more likely to cause staining ofsurfaces and fabrics. If cushions or fabrics do become stained by the oils inthe teak, we recommend the use of our proprietary Upholstery Cleaner.

General cleaning

We recommend periodically cleaning your teak products. To clean your teak & prevent mildew build up from dirt we recommend our Teak Cleaner.  If the wood grain stands up a bit after cleaning, lightly sand down the surface with fine sandpaper.

To maintain honey colour

To clean & maintain the natural honey colour we recommend cleaning and protecting your teak furniture with our Hauser Teak Care Kit. A protective coating can be applied at the time of purchase and maintained regularly following the instructions provided in the kit.

Finished Teak

Some teak is first vigorously brushed to obtain a textured and seasoned finish. After a coat of waterproofing primer, five coats of grey finish are applied. This process protects the wood against the weather, UV’s and various stains such as wine, coffee or oil and therefore requires little maintenance.

Imperfections such as hairline cracks may develop over time. If exposed to the elements, the finish will fade and wear through, exposing unfinished teak. Exposed teak will begin to acquire a silver-grey patina which is typical of unfinished teak.

Follow the steps below to maintain your Finished teak:

Use a dry, clean cloth to dust furniture weekly. To clean, wash gently with mild soap and water, dry with a soft cloth. To remove stains on finished teak, we recommend gently sanding the soiled area with fine sandpaper. Do not use abrasive cleaners or a power washer. When not in use protect pieces with our fitted furniture covers.

Teak FAQ

Q What are the black dots on my teak furniture?

A Although teak will not mildew, mildew sometimes grows on dirt and other foreign substances that have not been removed from the wood. This occurs more commonly in warm, humid climates. If this happens, please follow standard cleaning instructions immediately.
